This term has a number of definitions. Some people use it when cure is not possible, even if treatment can add years to the patient's life. Others say a patient is terminal when he or she has a specific short life expectancy, perhaps six months or one month. Still others mean that no other treatment can be given and "nature will take its course." If this term comes up, discuss with your doctor exactly what is meant by it.
